ExerciseThanksgiving is one of the few days out of the year where many feel guilt-free while indulging in all of the delicious dishes on the table. However, overindulging can lead to sluggishness and a bloated feeling. Implement these three fitness tips before and after the meal in our Chicago, IL apartments to help you beat the too-full feeling this Thanksgiving.

Start Working Out Before the Holiday

The sooner you begin, the better you will feel. Working out often causes an increase in hunger and the amount of food you must consume. If you begin working out before Thanksgiving, you will be used to the increased hunger feeling and eat more appropriately. You will also pay more attention to what you eat through your healthy activities, which will help you avoid eating to the point where you can't move on Thanksgiving.

Keep Up Your Fitness Routine

The holidays combined with Daylight Savings Time encourage laziness. Keep up your fitness routine before, during, and after the holiday to help prevent overeating and bloating. The more often you are active on a consistent schedule, the more likely you are to make smarter decisions when it comes to eating. Your fitness routine will also help keep your core tight, so you will look and feel better after a large meal.

Go for a Stroll

Thanksgiving food is incredibly tempting, and it can be hard to not overeat. If you make the mistake of eating one or two more plates than you should have, go for a stroll after the meal. Moving around will help you feel better and it burns calories. It can also help promote digestion, which is necessary when you eat too much Thanksgiving food.

No one likes feeling overly full, especially on a holiday like Thanksgiving. It's uncomfortable and, oftentimes, painful. Beat the bloat by following your fitness regime before and after Thanksgiving to help yourself feel better after the meal. Contact our leasing office now to schedule a time to see our floor plans and find your perfect entertaining space.

Brussels SproutsIn addition to Thanksgiving, a tradition has been started called Friendsgiving. They invite friends to their place, and they all enjoy a holiday meal with each other. If you have been invited to spend Thanksgiving with your friends, you may want to bring a dish that is very fall-like yet different from all of the common side dishes that are served on Thanksgiving. Here are a few trendy side dishes that you may want to bring with you to a Friendsgiving celebration.

Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin soup is a warm side dish that is earthy, comforting and tasty. Best of all, pumpkin soup is also very easy to make. Most recipes combine pumpkin puree with vegetable stock to create the base for this soup. There are different recipes out there that can spice up the soup or make it a bit unique. Look around to find something that appeals to you and then bring your soup along for your meal.

Brussels Sprouts

On Thanksgiving, green beans are commonly served. They can be served by themselves or in a green bean casserole. However, younger generations are turning to Brussels sprouts rather than green beans. If you want to bring a trendy side dish with you to a Friendsgiving event, consider making a Brussels sprouts-based dish. You can incorporate Brussels sprouts with bacon or even make fried Brussels sprouts. No matter how you prepare this cruciferous green vegetable, your dish is sure to be a hit.

Harvest Salad

If you want to bring something light and fresh to Friendsgiving, consider opting for a harvest salad. A harvest salad can be prepared in a number of different ways, but most call for your choice of lettuce or greens to be mixed with common fall fruits and walnuts or pecans. Some common fall fruits that you can throw into a harvest salad include cut-up apples, dried figs, cranberries or pears. You can also throw in things like goat cheese or butternut squash to add depth and flavor to the salad. A vinaigrette is typically used as a dressing.

CornIt's common to have a centerpiece on your Thanksgiving table, but unfortunately, centerpieces from florists or specialty shops can be pricey. And if money is tight, you may not want to spend a lot on one. Fortunately, there are many centerpieces you can make that look classy and are relatively inexpensive. Here are a few easy and inexpensive centerpieces you can make to display on Thanksgiving.

Mini Pumpkins on Candleholders

One of the easiest centerpieces you can make is to place mini pumpkins on flat candleholders or candle pedestals. You can find candleholders in a variety of colors, including cream, silver, and gold. Select a color that you like and then purchase them in varying heights. Then, purchase mini pumpkins. (You can also buy mini pumpkins in different colors, including cream.) Place the candleholders in the center of the table and put the pumpkins on top. If desired, add fake leaves or greenery at the base of the candleholders.

Clear Cylinder Vases With Fruit

Another easy centerpiece to make is to purchase clear cylinder vases and then fill them with fall fruit. You can select apples, pears, cranberries or oranges. You can also mix and match fruit to create different looks. Alternatively, you can fill a clear cylinder vase with autumn leaves or create a centerpiece with autumn flowers, such as mums.

A Flint Corn Display

The final easy centerpiece that you can create to display on your table this Thanksgiving is a flint corn display. You can purchase flint corn at most grocery stores, or you can purchase fake flint corn at craft stores. Start by selecting a serving bowl. You can choose a wooden bowl, or one that has some color to it, such as a metallic copper bowl. Place a piece of floral foam in the center of the bowl. Insert wheat stalks into the floral foam, so that the stalks cover the open space in the bowl in a circular shape and slightly protrude out of the bowl. Once that's complete, position three to five stalks of flint corn on the top, covering up your foam and wheat stalks. This will look like the corn is lying on a bed of wheat stalks, which creates a natural and festive centerpiece.

The holidays are nearly upon us, and before you know it, the new year will be here. If you're not happy with where you're living now, you may be looking to start the coming year off on the right foot in a new place. Carved PumpkinIn the fall season, beautifully decorated pumpkins are always appreciated in our Chicago apartments. This Halloween season, why not try a more non-traditional approach to your pumpkin carving tricks? The following ideas are surprisingly easy to accomplish once you have the right tools and technique down.

Create a Catty Pumpkin

If you want to make a catty impression, why not leverage a power tool to make the process go much faster? For this pumpkin carving idea, you’ll need a power drill, a wood spade bit (1” or bigger), a standard pumpkin carving knife and a large spoon. Don’t forget the pumpkin!

  1. First, cut the top off and set aside. Scoop out the insides with your large spoon.
  2. Use the wood spade drill bit to drill large holes in a polka dot pattern all around the pumpkin.
  3. Use the carving knife to make cat ears over each hole.
  4. Finally, if you want to make an even cooler pumpkin, coat it all over with a nice paint color of your choosing. Let that dry, then you’re ready to display your creation!

Make a Statement With Pumpkins

This idea is fun for use inside your apartment home, or you can even use it to make a sign for trick or treaters outside your door. You’ll need some craft paint and some print and peel paper. (You can find this at the craft store, too.) That’s it!

  1. First, give your pumpkin a nice coat of paint and let it dry.
  2. Next, print out some cute or clever sayings onto the print and peel paper. Now, just adhere the printable letters to the pumpkins and you’re ready to roll!

One idea might be to print an invitation for trick or treaters to take one treat, or to knock on your door. You could also leave surprise pumpkins around your home for guests to discover.

Pumpkin Pals

If you do have younger loved ones coming to visit, it’s fun to give little mini pumpkin gifts in the form of pumpkin pals. All you need is to decorate those colorful mini pumpkins with pieces of colored felt and craft glue. You can make rabbits, penguins, cats and anything else your imagination can dream up.

These are all fun ways to decorate pumpkins that are a little out of the ordinary. If you’d like to see our Chicago apartments, please don’t hesitate to contact us today!

Lobster PlatterLabor Day has come to represent the official end of summer. While there are certainly plenty of toasty days ahead of us, this is the weekend when people really get out and enjoy the beauty of the area surrounding our Chicago apartments. If you're looking for something fun to do this Labor Day weekend, here are a few places you'll find some of your "Windy City" neighbors hanging out.

Great American Lobster Fest

Nobody said you have to be on the coast to get incredible seafood. The Great American Lobster Fest is the perfect use for the Navy Pier, bringing with it live lobster flown in fresh from the cold waters of the Atlantic. This event features live music, an interesting assortment of arts and crafts for sale, and a variety of food options, too.

Ravinia Music Festival

The Ravinia Music Festival features some of the most magical musical acts Labor Day weekend has to offer. If you're looking for an excuse to step out of your comfort zone and venture a little farther away from downtown than you'd normally go, this music festival is the perfect place to lay down your blanket and open your picnic basket.

Navy Pier Fireworks

There's nothing quite like watching fireworks explode over a large body of water. The Navy Pier's fireworks offer a family-friendly way to celebrate the end of summer in style. It's free to check out the sparkling lights, but while you're there, you might want to consider taking a boat tour or hitching a ride on the climate-controlled Centennial Wheel.

African American Festival of Arts

Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood comes alive on Labor Day weekend, creating a simulated African village that's filled with vibrant art, interactive experiences and engaging music that'll make your heart skip a beat. You'll find museum-quality collectible artifacts and an assortment of hand-woven textiles. Be sure to check out some of the authentic food before you leave!

Start fall off on the right step. Move into a beautiful apartment that's close to all the action Chicago has to offer. Our Presidential Towers community offers an incredible assortment of amenities, and we're right in the heart of everything that makes this city great. Check out our available floor plans online today!

Watermelon SlicesLiving in our Chicago apartments, you’re in a great area to enjoy all the fun and activity that the big city has to offer – but do you know about the big holiday coming up? National Watermelon Day is cause for major celebration all through Chicago and throughout the rest of the United States, too. Are you prepared for the big day on August 3? Read on to find some easy recipes you can make to enjoy National Watermelon Day.

Delicious Adult Beverage Watermelon Slices at Your Apartments in Chicago

Looking to enjoy some casual fun at home with a few friends on National Watermelon Day? Make adult beverage watermelon slices! All you need is a watermelon (sliced into small triangles), 1 cup of tequila, 1/3 cup of triple sec and 1/4 cup of lime juice. Lay the watermelon in a large flat dish, and then add the liquids evenly. Allow it to soak in for about an hour in the refrigerator. To add that extra visual flair, grate some lime zest and sea salt atop the slices before you serve.

Delectable Watermelon “Cake”

Watermelon is already deliciously sweet, and this recipe ramps up the sweet factor even further. You’ll just need a seedless watermelon, whipped topping (in a can), and multi-colored edible sprinkles. Cut the watermelon into small rounds, about 2 inches thick each. Slice the rind off, and trim the edges to create a cake-like circle. Add a layer of whipped topping to the top of the slice, and then sprinkle liberally with the edible sprinkles. Cut into pizza-style triangles and serve! These cakes go fast, so you might just want to make one for everyone.

Refreshing Watermelon/Strawberry Caprese Salad

This sweet Caprese salad requires just 3 cups of cubed watermelon, 2 cups of diced strawberries, 1/2 cup of feta cheese, fresh basil and 1/4 cup of olive oil. Combine everything, and then season with sea salt and pepper. Add basil garnish before serving. This dish is light, delicious, and beautiful to look at.

BBQ RibsFather's Day is right around the corner, and if you don't have a place to take your dad this year, it's time to start researching a few restaurants. If you haven't started your research yet, we have a list of great barbecue restaurants to get you started. What dad wouldn't love barbecue on Father's Day?

Father's Day Restaurants to Try This Year

  • Barn & Company – If you've never been to this Lincoln Park restaurant, you are missing out. The smoked meats and chicken are some of the best in the area. The restaurant also has a great reputation in the city, so you can't go wrong with this option for good ole dad.
  • Chuck's Southern Comforts Cafe – If you're trying to save a bit of money, you can get some delicious food for less than $20 per person at this spot. The brisket and rib tips are a must-have on the menu, but the sampler is also a good option, especially if it's your first time dining here and you want to try a variety of offerings. The restaurant offers a unique menu with its Cajun-Creole, Mexican and Southern food blend of flavors.
  • Honky Tonk BBQ – If you're more into some Memphis-style dry-rubbed barbecue, this is the place you need to go. It's also a place where you can get some of the best pulled pork in the city. There may even be some live music that you and your dad can enjoy on Father's Day while eating some good barbecue.

You're sure to enjoy any of these choices for your Father's Day meal. You may want to let your dad help you decide which restaurant he prefers. It's also a good idea to make reservations, if possible. That way, you won't have to keep your dad waiting once you arrive at the restaurant. If you are also looking for a new place to call home that you would be proud to show your dad, look no further than our apartments in Chicago. Stop by today to see what we have available and move in before Father's Day!
