It's common to have a centerpiece on your Thanksgiving table, but unfortunately, centerpieces from florists or specialty shops can be pricey. And if money is tight, you may not want to spend a lot on one. Fortunately, there are many centerpieces you can make that look classy and are relatively inexpensive. Here are a few easy and inexpensive centerpieces you can make to display on Thanksgiving.
Mini Pumpkins on Candleholders
One of the easiest centerpieces you can make is to place mini pumpkins on flat candleholders or candle pedestals. You can find candleholders in a variety of colors, including cream, silver, and gold. Select a color that you like and then purchase them in varying heights. Then, purchase mini pumpkins. (You can also buy mini pumpkins in different colors, including cream.) Place the candleholders in the center of the table and put the pumpkins on top. If desired, add fake leaves or greenery at the base of the candleholders.
Clear Cylinder Vases With Fruit
Another easy centerpiece to make is to purchase clear cylinder vases and then fill them with fall fruit. You can select apples, pears, cranberries or oranges. You can also mix and match fruit to create different looks. Alternatively, you can fill a clear cylinder vase with autumn leaves or create a centerpiece with autumn flowers, such as mums.
A Flint Corn Display
The final easy centerpiece that you can create to display on your table this Thanksgiving is a flint corn display. You can purchase flint corn at most grocery stores, or you can purchase fake flint corn at craft stores. Start by selecting a serving bowl. You can choose a wooden bowl, or one that has some color to it, such as a metallic copper bowl. Place a piece of floral foam in the center of the bowl. Insert wheat stalks into the floral foam, so that the stalks cover the open space in the bowl in a circular shape and slightly protrude out of the bowl. Once that's complete, position three to five stalks of flint corn on the top, covering up your foam and wheat stalks. This will look like the corn is lying on a bed of wheat stalks, which creates a natural and festive centerpiece.

If you're one of the millions who create a list of New Year's resolutions, you understand that they are easier to make than to keep. Sometimes, we've simply set the bar too high or we lose our willpower along the way. Whatever the reason for the lapse, most of us have made — and broken — resolutions. If you're looking for a resolution that you're likely to keep, we've come up with this short list of resolutions worth making.
4 New Years Resolution Ideas
Begin a meditation practice
If you’re not practicing meditation, now is the time. According to an article in Psychology Today, simple meditation offers a multitude of physical, emotional and mental benefits. It takes very little time, you don’t need any special tools, and you can do it wherever you are (except maybe while you’re driving).
Add some exercise in your daily routine
Whether you're running miles a day or rarely step away from your desk, it is likely that you can use a bit more exercise. The first thing to keep in mind is to set realistic goals. Come up with one small change you're sure you can master. Once you've accomplished that milestone, come up with another.
Get to know your neighbors
Given the number of Chicago apartments around you, imagine how many amazing people you could meet. The best way to get to know people in your neighborhood is to spend some time with them. Join your neighborhood gym, get to know people at church, or join a club that meets in the area. One of the benefits of living in Chicago is accessibility to so many different types of groups. If you're a writer, join a writer's group. If you're interested in art, join an art appreciation club. The point is to do things you find enjoyable and to meet new people with similar interests.
Be a visitor in your own city
Consider all the great things there are to see and do in Chicago and all the experiences you have yet to enjoy. This year is all about getting to know your own city, experiencing the places you've never visited, and appreciating Chicago as though you're a tourist.
Take full advantage of this blank slate with these fun suggestions! Resolutions are an easy way to prioritize what you want this chapter in your life to look like. If one of your resolutions is to upgrade your apartment, give us a call. We can help you find the perfect home!

2018 is almost over, and it's time to look back and reflect on our year. What have we achieved, and what surprises have come our way? What would you like to focus on in 2019? What hidden dreams and aspirations are calling to you, waiting for you to take them out of the shadows and make them a reality? Start with some simple goals, and watch as they help clear the way to even bigger goals.
Achievable Goals for the New Year
- Go to bed earlier: Poor sleep affects every aspect of your life. More sleep means fewer physical problems and increased mental health, stamina and productivity. Make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.
- Connect with others: Many people suffer from loneliness in our modern age. Reach out, join a group, find a job or volunteer as a way of forming meaningful human bonds and friendships that don't fade. Life is always better with friends.
- Try out a new form of exercise: If you are in a weight loss or fitness rut, why not try something new? Go trail hiking, take up a new sport, or join a fitness group. Find what works for you and enjoy the thrill of a new adventure while taking care of your body.
- Catch up on your finances: Start saving or investing. Cut costs and automatically send that amount to your savings account or toward paying down loans. Listen to financial management podcasts or pick up a book to learn more about finances.
- Spend more time outdoors: Nature is its own therapy. Being outdoors restores your sense of wonder and helps clear the cognitive clutter of everyday life. Enjoy physical exercise in nature's gym.
- Read more books: Fiction books can help you relax. Non-fiction books can increase your knowledge and skills. Whatever type of book you choose to read, they are all good for your brain.
- Eat more fish: Fish contain omega-3s, healthy fats that keep your heart healthy. Fish is easy to prepare and great for those busy nights when you want to make a quick, healthy meal.

Christmas is just around the corner. Don't wait too long to purchase gifts as really popular gifts tend to fly off the real (and virtual) shelves quickly this time of year. If you have been wondering what to get for the dear children in your life, here are a few ideas of what's hot this time of year.
Popular Christmas Gifts 2018
- Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit: Coding isn't magic, but it can seem that way with all the fun you can have creating and building in the digital world. Children use a wand to learn how to code their own art, apps, music and games.
- Pomsies Patches Plush: If you know of a child who loves soft, adorable, interactive toys, Pomsies are hard to beat. With rainbow soft fur, big eyes, and over 50 different interactions, it's hard not to fall in love. Each Pomsie comes with a brush.
- Air Hogs Supernova: Control the Supernova with just your hands without touching it! Your child will love showing off over 30 moves and nine tricks. Their friends will think it is magic.
- Fingerlings: For the extra cuddly kid, it's hard to beat a Fingerling. Fingerlings look like monkeys with extra long arms for cuddling and hugging. They can even give kisses and record kid voices with funny feedback.
- Thrill Rides Bionic Blast Roller Coaster Building Set: For that builder/thrill seeker/future engineer in your life, the K'NEX Thrill Rides Bionic Blast Building Set comes with over 800 parts to keep him or her busy and entertained. It even comes with a VR viewer so the child can experience the ride from a virtual angle.
- Think & Learn Rocktopus: This is a great way to let kids learn all about music. This fun octopus teaches kids how to use different instruments and rhythms to let them experiment and try making their own music.
- Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Epic Sewer Lair Play Set: This four-level, seven-room Teenage Mutant Ninja play set should have existed when you were a kid and fell in love with the turtles. Instead, you had to wait this long for such an awesome play set to arrive, so you bought it for your own child, because the turtles never go out of style.
